Planting instructions: Separate each head of garlic into individual cloves. Plant each clove 2-3” deep and 3-4” apart. The plants will begin growing immediately, and will have visible greenery all winter. Harvest the plants in mid-summer when there are 4-5 dead leaves at the base of each plant. Each clove will produce a new head of garlic.
Cure your harvested garlic by letting it sit or hang in a warm, dry, well-ventilated, shady location for about three weeks. Curing is complete when the skins are papery and dry. Curing improves the flavor of your garlic and allows it to be stored for longer.
Hardneck garlic produces heads with fewer but larger cloves. They also produce garlic scapes, which can be harvested in the spring and be used in a wide variety of recipes. Softneck garlic does not produce scapes but has a longer shelf-life and can be braided for storage. All varieties we sell do well in the PNW, and we encourage you to try several varieties and label carefully to see if there is one you prefer!
